Episode 8: Day 0 - Simpler Times

"Hey Mel, can you take the trash out from the front?" Von asked pretending to work by making boxes.
"Yeah, I got it." She put away boxes onto the walls, expanding the pink that already overwhelmed them.

Megan walked to the back table from the office. "Can someone pack this? It's 300 for tomorrow at 10am." She held a piece of paper.
"I got it." Rachel reached out to grab the paper.
"Do you need help?" Vankelia asked.
"No, you just keep making the snowflakes. I need something to pass the time anyway."

"We have that meeting tonight don't we?" Vankelia asked.
Von huffed. "I forgot. I guess no family dinner tonight."
"Famiry dinner?" Luana poked her head to the back from the drink station.
Nina laughed in the front, finishing a note that she was attaching to the coffee maker. "You guys are silly."

"Yo, pass me that when you take another hit." Jiko asked Sean. They were hanging out at their friends basement with Becca and about $40 worth of burgers and doughnuts. "Dude I got these for free."

Sean blew a smoke up into the air and passed it on.
"Dude you took such a big hit!" Becca said laughing. "Pass me those chips."
"Don't we have that meeting tonight?" Sean asked.
"I don't know...and better yet...I don't care." Becca said eating chips while flipping the channels on the TV.
"Sean, you up to go to P5 tomorrow? I need a new fresh of kicks."
"Yeah sure." Watching the screen. "Yo, stop. What was that?" Becca flipped back to the news.

"An outbreak of epic proportions has taken over major cities on the East Coast including New York, Boston and Washington DC. Starting from a small lab in the DC neighborhood of Georgetown, the outbreak looks like it'll be crossing the border up to Toronto in a matter of days."

"What is that reporter talking about?" Sean asked, passing on a hit that Jiko offered him.
"I don't know and frankly..." Becca started, Jiko joined in, "We don't care." She switched the channel to the Food Network.

"Mom, I get it! You think I'm a bad daughter! I don't need you to remind me that!" Lauren Hewins said storming out of the house and trying to get to her car before her mom caught up with her. "This is ridiculous." She got in, turned on the car and switched the radio to her favorite station. Her mom knocked on the driver side window.

"What is it?" Lauren said lowering the window.
"You don't storm away from me like that. Your father is ill with the flu and you can't even be respectful enough to not have people over partying and drinking late into the night?"
"Whatever, mom. I have a date. I'm going now." She raised the window and backed out of her drive way. As she was leaving, she looked back at the rear view mirror and saw her mom standing at the edge of the drive way shaking her head. Lauren couldn't help but feel a bit guilty.

"Thanks for today. It was really nice. I enjoyed that hike and picnic." Susie said.
"No problem. I figured you'd enjoy it. It's such a nice day out." JC said. They held hands as they walked down Bethesda Avenue. "We have an hour or so to kill before the meeting, what do you want to do?"
"I don't care. We could go sit on one of the benches on Bethesda Lane and share that dessert you made."
JC smiled. "Sounds like a plan."

"Hey guys!" JC and Susie turned around. It was Elizabeth Puglisi and Claire.
"Oh hey you two. What are you up to?" Susie asked.
"We're just going to grab some things at Blue Mercury." Claire said.
"But I need to get a book at Barnes & Noble first. I'm doing some extra credit for class." Elizabeth said. Claire rolled her eyes.
"She doesn't even need to do extra credit."
"I do." Elizabeth said. "I'm pretty sure I got an A- on that last test."

They talked a while longer. "It's 'cause I'm the Demoralizer." They all turned around to see David and Eric. "Whatever." Eric said.

"Wow, we're all here." Susie noted.
"It is Bethesda, Susie." David said.
"Well I didn't expect you to get to the meeting on time. You're always late." She said.
"Hog wash. I'm always on time."
"Well it was nice running into all of you guys, but JC and I got to go."

They walked away from the group. "I feel like we can never be alone here."
JC nodded in agreement. "Well we're going back to Boston soon. It'll be better there."
"Yeah, I know. I'm excited. Only a week left."

"How do you know it's happening tonight?" A girl asked.

"Haven't you been watching the news?" Another girl said.
"Yeah...but...the meeting."
"It'll be a massacre, I'm sure."
"Then why are we going?" The first girl asked.
"What else can we do? Just stay towards the back. When shit hits the fan, we'll be able to run out."

The first girl nodded.
"I hate that this is happening...I hate this."
"Don't worry, we'll get through it."
They both combed their hair and put on their coats.
"Mom, we're leaving!" The second girl said as she put her cell phone in her pocket.
