Episode 25: Day 4 - Rummage

"Check that car!" Elizabeth yelled at David as the others were running around Friendship Heights checking every available car. The group had donned only black apparel in an attempt to hide in the shadows in ever a zombie appeared.

"It doesn't work." David said, trying on the car. Each vehicle they had tried, they noticed had already been ransacked for parts by other people. They regrouped in their hiding spot and hashed out what had happened.

"We're stranded, aren't we?" Vankelia asked.
"No, we're not." Elizabeth said studying the map. "We'll have to check a bit further up Wisconsin towards Tenley Town."
"But that's too risky!" Kelly said. "If zombies attack, it'll be too far away to come back. I won't stand for this." She got up and left the room in a huff.
"I'm all for trying." Ashleigh said. "We have nothing to lose...if we stay here, we starve...at least with Elizabeth's idea, we have a chance of surviving...but I think there may be a better way..."

Everyone looked at her. "Go on..." Elizabeth said.
Ashleigh described a plan on barricading Wisconsin Avenue and setting it as a trap. They would then wait for someone, "We've seen them drive by at night" to stop at the barricade. The group would then ambush them and steal their car.
"It's diabolical." Sami said. "We'd be leaving THEM stranded."

Elizabeth got up and paced the room.
"You know we can't do this!" Sami insisted to her.
"What choice do we have! This is the only solution." Ashleigh said.
"Enough!" Elizabeth shouted. She shook her head. "I'm sorry....Sami, but we have no other choice. We must do whatever it takes to survive."
Kelly walked in and heard what had been decided. "Finally, something that makes sense."

The group grabbed weapons and headed outside. There was already a few cars that formed an almost natural barricade on Wisconsin. They pushed the cars together and gathered any debris, from garbage cans to cement blocks and placed it along the wall as well. Like a dam, they were going to use the wall as a way to stop a flowing car.

"Do you still hold angst against the other people that escaped? You know, like JC and them." Sami asked Elizabeth as they were piling garbage on the wall. The streets seemed really quiet.
"I don't even want to hear his name."
"Did something else happen?"
"I don't want to explain it...but yes..."
"Just tell me." Sami said.
Elizabeth glared at her. "We don't have time for this. We need to gather more supplies." She turned around to look for everyone. She saw everyone but one person. "Where is Ashleigh?"
The sun was beginning to set and Elizabeth knew they only had about an hour left before they needed to retreat back into their hiding.
"Has anyone seen Ashleigh?" She yelled out to the others. No one could give an answer. Elizabeth ran up the wall to get a higher view. Down the road she could see Ashleigh fiddling with a door.
"Ashleigh what are you doing?!" Elizabeth asked. Ashleigh looked at her in shock and ran back. Suddenly a large group of zombies broke through the glass door and began chasing her.
"Ashleigh, behind you!!" Elizabeth screamed. Ashleigh turned around and saw a male zombie running after her. She quickly sprinted back as Elizabeth yelled for everyone to retreat.

"Help me!" Sami said still hobbling. Her ankle hadn't healed and the zombies were coming closer. Ashleigh managed to escape and David took a bat to the face of the zombie chasing her. "Go, go, go!" He yelled at everyone. They were nearing the elevator doors with Ashleigh helping Sami. She looked back and saw another zombie approach.
"I...I...I can't help you." Ashleigh said and she let go of Sami who tried to hold onto her tshirt by the neck.
"Let go!" Ashleigh yelled. The zombies got closer.
"Hurry up!" Elizabeth said from the elevators.
"You can't leave me!!!" Sami said pleading.
"If you don't let go, we'll both die out here!!" Ashleigh said.
"How can you leave me!"

"HURRY UP!!!!" Elizabeth said at the girls. Ashleigh turned around and elbowed Sami in the nose until she finally let go. Blood flowed down Sami's face as she cried on the floor.
"Better you than me..." Ashleigh said running towards the elevators. She jumped in as soon as they closed as the rest of the group watched Sami being torn apart by the zombies that caught her.

"What happened?!" Becca asked.
"She told me to go...she knew we'd both be dead if I continued to help her." Ashleigh lied. Kelly knew she wasn't telling the truth. She saw Ashleigh elbow Sami in the face, which apparently everyone else missed or chose to ignore. Kelly didn't say anything however, just being glad that they were safe. Once they got back to their safe zone they all looked out the window. The zombies were still feasting on Sami's body and more than two dozen appeared. The stragglers scavenged for food around the area, picking at bones that were already bleached by the sun.

"What were you doing by that door?!" Elizabeth asked.
"I..I saw a bunch of material we could have used for the wall." Ashleigh said.
"And somehow you missed the group of zombies that were waiting there?" Kelly asked with a raised eyebrow.
"How was I supposed to see them? It was dark in there."
"You could have heard them."
Ashleigh stood up. "What are you accusing me of?"
Kelly also stood up. "That you did that on purpose."
"BITCH." Ashleigh said.
"Murderer." Kelly replied back and both girls stormed off to opposite ends of the room.

"Well that was pleasant." David said only to receive Elizabeth's disapproving glare. "What...it was."

That night the tensions in the group was unsettling but they didn't realize that by tomorrow they would be reunited with their former co-workers and the tensions would hit new levels. It was their survival on the line and they knew they would do whatever it took to ensure that.
